NUC - Only In 7 Universities In Nigeria Do Ph.Ds Account For 60% Of Lecturers

The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Julius Okojie, has said that the University of Ilorin is one of the seven universities in the country that have 60 percent academic staff with Ph.D. qualifications.

According to #LiveschoolNews, the NUC scribe disclosed this last Tuesday (October 14, 2014) at the First International Conference of the University of Ilorin Postgraduate Students’ Association (POGSASS) held at the University Multi-purpose Hall.

Prof. Okojie, represented by the Chairman, NUC Standing Committee on Private Universities, Prof. Akaneren Essien, commended the authorities of the University of Ilorin for placing high premium on both undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

Prof. Essien disclosed that the last review of Nigerian Universities conducted by the NUC revealed that seven out of about 118 universities in the country have 60 per cent of their academic staff with Ph.D. certificates.

The NUC boss advised the management of the University of Ilorin not to rest on its oars but strive harder to attain over 80 per cent of its academic staff with Ph.D. qualifications.

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), who was represented on the occasion by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Yisa Fakunle, disclosed that the University of Ilorin accords utmost priority to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

The Vice-Chancellor explained that the management of the University is working round the clock to justify the school’s popular slogan, “Better By Far”, adding that the University authority’s commitment, hard work and dedication, coupled with the support of staff and students, were responsible for Unilorin’s rating as the number one University in Nigeria.

Among the higher institutions represented at the Conference were, Uthman Danfodio University, Sokoto; Tai Solarin University of Education, Ikene; Isa Kaita College of Education, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina; Al-Hikma University, Ilorin; Kaduna State University, Kaduna; and the Federal Polytechnic, Bida.
