The "Brain Vs Beauty" debate which followed the Miss UNILAG 2014 beauty pageant has been reopened by a Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Ibadan(UI), Prof. Isaac Olawale Albert.
In a video posted on the Saharatv YouTubechannel, Prof. Albert queried the logic behind rewarding winners of beauty pageants with a car while the winner of an intellectual contest received only a laptop and N100 cash.
Prof. Albert  faulted the Nigerian system which does not reward intellectual achievement.
"In Nigeria, knowledge is not respected. I won all my awards outside Nigeria. Nigeria has never given me a pencil, he said.
He also questioned the University of Lagos (UNILAG) for what he described as the promotion of beauty above scholarship.
"Is University of Lagos established to promote beauty or to promote scholarship?" Prof. Albert asked.
The 'Brain Vs Beauty' drama started on the 26th of September, after Miss Damilare Babajide Uche, a 400 level student of Law at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), emerged winner of the Miss UNILAG 2014 Pageant.
She was awarded a brand new Toyota Matrix and a nice sum as monthly maintenance  salary.
Sahara Reporters (SR) started the 'Brain Vs Beauty' debate following Damilare's victory, comparing the "so-called beauty queen" prize to that of 18-year-old Zainab Olaitan, winner of a "rigorous academic competition."
In a swift reaction, the organisers of the pageant, Sulcata Entertainment, faulted several claims made in the SR report, which the company's CEO, Oraka Nnanyelu Nvy, called "a conscious attempt directed towards tarnishing and frustrating the efforts of the Entertainment company."
Despite the response, the SR report, continued to cause ripples, like Prof. Albert's recent lecture.
Quoting a statement allegedly made by female activist, Joe Odumakin, Prof. Albert criticised an 'unfortunate' trend which he said is being copied from the United States.
"Brains don't sell any longer. This is a serious problem with the people of this world," he said.
"The Kardashias, Cyrusses, OJ Simpsons, Rihannas etc are the celebrities in the US. The world is quickly adopting that from the US without thinking for a second.
"What an unfortunate world.
Hmmm, i strongly believe dat prof has a point in that perspective....Beauty is much more accepted than brains and that aint right or fair. Hopefuli sumday that would change.
adios!
